Biography

Bert Stern was born in New York in 1929. At the age of 17 an artistic director advised him to study design and employed him as an assistant. Subsequently, Fleur Cowles took him on as artistic director of the magazine Flair that she launched. Bert Stern was called up for service and made films in Japan. His photography career took off during the Korean War. On return to New York, he worked for an advertising agency then worked with renowned fashion magazines including Vogue. His last production was the famous ‘The Last Sitting’ series assembling 2,500 shots of Marilyn Monroe taken six weeks before her death.
