Born in Frankfurt in 1954, Bernhard Hartmann started out as a press photographer for a major German newspaper at the age of 14. Then, after studying art, he became a landscape photographer. He created dramatic images using cinemascope which are often compared to Caspar David Friedrich’s romantic paintings. He has a preference to photograph places where the arts are practised and expressed. He thus presents series on operas, theatres and European manors.
