About this photograph :
Flatiron District
The Flatiron District is a small neighbourhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan, named after the Flatiron Building at 23rd Street, Broadway and Fifth Avenue. The term "Flatiron District" is recent (approx. 1985), and is due to its increasingly residential character, as well as to the increase in the number of restaurants in the area. This area, made up of primarily commercial buildings, used to be known as the "Photo District" because of the large number of photographers' studios which moved there because of the low rent. A part of the area was known as the "Toy District", in reference to the toy manufacturers located in the Toy Center buildings at 23rd Street and Broadway and the area around it. Since the 2000s, many publishers have their offices in the district, as well as advertising agencies and computer companies and start-ups making this area a new "Silicon Alley" or "Multimedia Gulch", along with TriBeCa and SoHo.
About the artist :
Cédric
Mainguy
Cédric Mainguy was born in Aix en Provence on June 2nd, 1975. Cédric was introduced to travelling around the world at a very young age. He returned to France to go to university and completed his studies at Reims Management School in 1999. Cedric then continued travelling around the world for several years, experiencing other cultures, meeting people from other communities, seeing the beauty and sometimes ugliness of the world. His journey finally brought him to New York where he lived for 7 years. Whilst working as an investment banker, Cedric continued working on his true passion, photography. He soon specialized in creating large panoramic pictures of Manhattan street blocks. Exploring new techniques, Cedric developed a unique way of capturing the spirit of New York. Thanks to his original perspective, the streets of New York reveal their true nature and seem to have a mood of their own.
