Leonard Cohen
Peter
Hankfield
About this photograph :
Leonard Cohen
This Canadian artist started out as a writer. His first collection of poems was published in 1956 and his first novel in 1963. He began to sing in 1966 at American folk festivals. His first album Songs of Leonard Cohen was released in 1967. Many of Cohen’s songs were used as cover songs and sometimes translated into other languages. Some of these covers were more successful than the original songs. In 1994, Leonard Cohen retired to a Buddhist monastery. He was ordained as a Zen Buddhist monk in 1996. In 2008 was the year of his stage comeback. The singer was then 73 and the critics were full of praise.
About the artist :
Peter
Hankfield
Originally from
Liverpool, Peter had always immersed himself in rock culture. Lacking a musical
ear, he had an eye for photography from an early age. Whilst the whole of
Liverpool was listening to the Beatles on the radio, Peter had already turned
his attention to the American music scene. Barely 18 years old, contrary to the
wishes of his parents, he decided to go to London in 1969 to become a
photographer. Peter knew that institutional training would not suit his strong
personality. He therefore chose to train himself in the field offering his
current events photographs to the press. Up against rebuffs but inspired by the
criticism and advice handed out to him, Peter learnt to become a good
technician ending up a talented photographer. He then felt ready to achieve his
dream to be a rock photographer and knocked at the door of a musical press
group. He was handed his first report. In July 1972 when Peter was only just 23
years old he went to Montreal to photograph the Rolling Stones in concert. His
career as a photographer had taken off. His skill allowed him to disengage from
technical contingencies achieving artistic candid photos. He was content to
photograph music legends like Bob Marley, Keith Richards, Lou Reed and Miles
Davis on stage. His huge respect for musicians allowed him to feel closer to
on-stage reality. Peter is now living in Cornwall, where he continues to work
as a photographer.
